Classes & Workshops

I have recently moved to Charleston, SC and am in the process of setting up my new studio space with new tools and equipment, allowing me to teach individual students or small groups.

Every student will receive personal instruction to some exciting and fun techniques of fabricated jewelry. Many of these workshops require no previous jewelry experience - just a lot of energy and enthusiasm! For those with a bit (or lot) of previous experience, one-on-one instruction can be arranged to help you add to your techniques or refine and hone the skills you already have.

Please check back for upcoming workshop schedules as I move forward. Workshops may be from one to three sessions, 3 - 6 hours a session depending on the course.

SUNDAY ONE DAY WORKSHOPS

Bracelet by Merle K

Fantastic Fold Forming!
TBD
Please check back!

Fold, hammer, open - voilá! Fold forming is an exciting technique where sheet metal is manipulated and hammered to create fabulously textured, 3-dimensional, organic forms.  This is a relatively quick process, so students will have the opportunity to create a variety of basic pieces as well as explore more involved folds, textured fold forms, and creating larger sculptural 3-D forms.
No experience needed. Open to all students ages 16+

Tools available in the studio. Metals (copper, bras and bronze) available through the insturctor.

Keum-Boo by instructor

Keum-Boo
TBD
Please check back!

Keum-boo is an ancient Asian process where gold is bonded to the surface of silver at a very low temperature, creating spectacular results. The actual gold used may be minimal but the results are not! Students will learn how to prepare sterling silver for use instead of fine silver, foil preparation and handling of the materials. Once the gold is applied, the metal will the be fabricated into final pieces such as earrings, pendants or bracelets. Bring your tweezers, X-Acto knife and a fine pair of scissors for your tools.
A $30 fee covers the gold foil and sample fine silver discs.

Cuttlefish pendant with stones by ABrown

Gravity Casting
TBD  1-3 sessions
Please check back!

In this fast and furious workshop, we experiment with various processes to create instantaneous pieces by pouring molten (yes, molten!) metal into cuttlefish, brooms, ice, salt - you name it.
Bring all your old unmatched earrings, chains and other silver to melt. The results are organic and one-of-a-kind that can be used as is after cleanup or incorporated into a larger piece. All interested students welcome. No experience required.

A $20 fee is paid to the instructor to cover sample metals, enough to complete one project. Additional metal (silver) available for purchase through the instructor

Titanium pendant by Donna H

Add Color with Titanium - Anodizing Workshop
2 -3 day sessions
TBD
Please check back!

In this 3 week intensive, students have the opportunity to create some amazing pieces with this lightweight and hypo-allergic metal. Tthis grey, rather boring metal takes on a full rainbow of colors that can be produced by heat, or by using stencils, painting, scribes and masks with controlled electric voltages using an anodizer. Color is instantaneous. After the anodizing is complete, finishing techniques are explored as to how the titanium can be used alone or as an element in a larger design. Some jewelry experience desired but not necessary to create a finished piece.

A $10 fee is paid to the instructor to cover sample metals, enough to complete a bracelet and/or earrings and 1 ring.  Additional Titanium and Niobium will be available for purchase during the class
